11 October 2024, Copenhagen. The Philippine Embassy held a Basic Hand Sewing Workshop on 11 October 2024 at the Embassy Hall, which was facilitated by a Filipino tailor based in Denmark, Ms. Angelica Abas. Attended by 16 Filipino participants, the hands-on workshop taught them various techniques for mending, repairing, and repurposing their clothes.
The workshop was organized as an upskilling activity for Filipinos in Denmark, which would allow them to save resources. For instance, minor alterations in Denmark, such as shortening the length of pants, already cost around $20. Participants therefore learned the basic stitches (running, backstitch, cross-stitch, and blind stitch) and basic methods for restoration of clothes (minor holes, alteration of pants/shirts, placing of buttons).
The activity is part of the Embassy's Gender and Development (GAD) program and its contribution to the circular economy on sustainable consumption.
