Copenhagen, Denmark, 22 April 2024 - Philippine Embassy to the Kingdom of Denmark hosted the Maritime Security Conference, in partnership with the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen (KU) on 19 April 2024.

Ambassador Leo M. Herrera-Lim welcomed participants to the conference, stressing its importance to archipelagic nations like the Philippines, and for all those who share the hope for international law, peace, and good sense to rescue the world from its chaotic state of affairs.

The conference aims to broaden awareness of the 2016 Arbitral Award, by having legal experts discuss multiple maritime security challenges facing the international community in upholding rules-based order and preservation of maritime security.

Professor Yoshifumi Tanaka of KU discussed the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Award and seven years after. Danish Chief Counsel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Henning Dobson Fugleberg Knudsen, gave insights about the negotiations reaching the 2022 Hans Island agreement between Canada and Denmark. Attorneys Thomas Edelgaard Christensen and Ember Lagden of the Gorrissen Federspiel discussed private law issues caused by the security situation in the Red Sea, including contractual implications for owners, charterers, cargo interest and other stakeholders.

The conference was participated in by members of the diplomatic corps, including representatives of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Danish lawyers and law students; the Danish Maritime Authority and the Danish Shipping Industry; and think tanks in Denmark. It was live streamed by the University to other registered participants and Philippine Foreign Service Posts. END.
